COP26: Ghana and Sweden signs agreement for climate cooperation under the Paris Agreement

During COP26 in Glasgow, the rulebook for Article 6 of the Paris Agreement is being negotiated. Although the rulebook is not yet fully completed, it is possible to cooperate internationally. Sweden and Ghana have now agreed to work together to achieve emission reductions and by doing so lead the way in the implementation of Article 6.

At the event at COP26, H.E. Per Bolund the Swedish Minister for Environment and Climate and Deputy Prime Minister shared his thoughts on international cooperation and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

“It is our hope that the partnership established through this Memorandum of Understanding will showcase how Article 6 cooperation can promote sustainable development and raise ambition whilst ensuring environmental integrity, transparency, and robust accounting”, says H.E. Per Bolund.

The Memorandum was signed by the implementing agencies from both countries, Hon. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency of Ghana and Director General Robert Andrén, of the Swedish Energy Agency. The latter highlighted the value of this cooperation between Ghana and Sweden.

“This agreement should be seen as a sign of leadership and it is our intention to raise the bar for climate cooperation. It is a solid foundation for our continued cooperation and together we will increase climate ambition and accelerate our transition to sustainable societies”, says D.G Robert Andrén.

For Ghana and Sweden this is an important step in the direction of facilitating international cooperation to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and safeguard our environment.
