Ghana signs climate protection agreement with Switzerland
Yesterday Ghana and Switzerland signed a cooperation agreement governing the implementation of climate protection activities, within the framework of the Paris Agreement. Just one month ago, Switzerland signed the first agreement of its kind worldwide with Peru. Implementation agreements with a number of other countries are set to follow in the coming year. By means of an international tender process, the KliK Foundation is facilitating the development of a climate protection programme designed by Ghana.
As a signatory to the Paris Agreement, Switzerland has undertaken to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to its 1990 levels. It aims to achieve part of this reduction within the framework of bilateral cooperation projects with other countries.
The bilateral implementation agreement creates a framework within which Switzerland can credit emission reductions through cooperative activities with other countries. The KliK Foundation therefore only supports climate protection activities with countries which have such an agreement in place.
With the signing of the agreement with Ghana, the foundation has been laid for the long-term cooperation of the Foundation with the authorities in Ghana. Discussions on the cooperation between the two countries commenced in 2019 and were formalised in the spring of this year with a “Memorandum of Understanding” during the visit of Ghana’s president.
Development of the first programme for clean, climate-friendly energy
The KliK Foundation is supporting the first programme that has been developed by Ghana's Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) in collaboration with its Environmental Protection Agency. The aim is to promote access to clean and climate-friendly energy for households, communities and businesses in Ghana. The National Clean Energy Programme (NCEP) aims at promoting areas that are not already supported or regulated as part of Ghana’s climate policy. The emissions reductions achieved in this way can be viewed as additional to the combined climate protection measures of both countries.
The development of the NCEP is now being put out to tender by the KliK Foundation. The tender documents can be viewed on the Foundation’s website. This process enables the NECP to be established jointly by the two countries in a multi-pronged approach, and financed by the KliK Foundation.
