Ghana signed a bilateral agreement with the Government of Switzerland to cooperate under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement in in November 2020. The Agreement provides a foundation for driving investments into climate mitigation technologies. The bilateral agreement was subsequently ratified by the Parliament of Ghana in June 2021 paving way for the implementation of the Agreement.
Under the Agreement, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have been collaborating with the Klik Foundation. The Klik Foundation, a private company finances investments into climate mitigation actions by acquiring the internationally transferred mitigation outcomes (ITMOs) or carbon credits resulting from the implementation of the mitigation actions. The Klik procures the carbon credits on behalf of motor fuel importers of Switzerland. Under the Ghana- Switzerland Bilateral Agreement, the Klik Foundation has identified some opportunities in the waste, energy, agriculture, transport and green cooling sectors. Currently the Klik Foundation is involved in the development of about 10 mitigation projects and these projects are at various stages of development.
The Klik Foundation Board of Directors (BoD) paid a 4 -day working visit to Ghana from the 13th to 18th March 2023 as a testament to the relationship between Ghana and the Klik Foundation on the development of mitigation projects. During the visit, the BoD of Klik Foundation paid a courtesy call on the management of the EPA, held meetings with the business community, partners and project developers.
The BoD held meetings with the GIZ, EPA and the Energy Commission on the development of a green cooling programme which will see Ghana gain access to green and efficient cooling devices.
The BoD also visited another project developer in the name of KOFA. KOFA is implementing a battery swapping programme with focus on retrofitting fossil fuel bikes to electronic bikes.
The BoD during their visit also undertook site visits to Agro Kings Limited, a rice farm located at Asutuare in the Greater Accra Region to understand the work being undertaken by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in rice fields from implementing the Alternate Wetting and Drying method of irrigating rice farms.
In Kasei a community in Ejura Sekyere- Odumase District of the Ashanti Region, the BoD met with a cocoa growing community and interacted with women who are benefiting from a partnership between Act Commodities, Environfit and Farmerline to supply improved cookstoves (ICS) as part of farm input supplied by the later. The ICS improves cooking time as well as reducing fuel used by users.
On the next steps, Klik Foundation intends to expand its investments in additional mitigation activities by finding more eligible mitigation projects and undertaking capacity building programmes for project developers.
