Tanzanian Delegation Visits EPA to Seek Carbon Market Expertise

A seven-member team from Tanzania, today commenced a four-day learning visit to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to gain insights and understanding of the carbon market implementation under Article 6.

They were welcomed by Dr. John Kingsley Krugu, Executive Director of the EPA, along with two Deputy Executive Directors and some Directors of the Agency.

Dr. Krugu expressed his delight in hosting the delegation and emphasized the importance of sharing knowledge and experiences for mutual benefit and national development.

During the meeting, Dr. Krugu highlighted Ghana’s readiness to assist Tanzania and other countries in establishing a carbon market through its Carbon Market Office (CMO).

The CMO provides administrative and technical services to the public and supports the implementation of Ghana’s international carbon market and non-market approaches framework.

Hosted by the EPA’s Climate Change Unit, the CMO performs various functions such as policy implementation, transaction management, mitigation activity support, monitoring, reporting, and accountability.

In response, Honorable Ashatu Kijaji, the Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office for Union and Environment in Tanzania conveyed heartfelt thanks for the cordial reception accorded to her entourage and communicated her strong desire to obtain expert guidance and recommendations from Ghana regarding carbon markets.

Impressed by Ghana’s substantial advancements in creating a well-functioning carbon market, she anticipated gaining critical perspectives that would positively impact Tanzania’s endeavors.

By sharing knowledge and expertise, both nations aspire to amplify their climate change coping skills and drive sustainable development.

Taking cues from Ghana, Tanzania plans to create a credible carbon market system that attracts domestic and foreign investment.

Consequently, this step reduces greenhouse gases and demonstrates joint commitment to tackling pressing ecological concerns. Teamwork around initiatives like this propels Africa toward more eco-friendly and low-carbon futures.
