The Swedish Energy Agency will finance an e-mobility and a solar project to reduce emissions in Ghana.
The Ghanaian company Solar Taxi and the international carbon expert South Pole are supporting the e-mobility project.
Sweden and Ghana have an agreement to cooperate under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The agreement allows the Swedish Energy Agency to finance projects that reduce emissions in the West African country. The Swedish Energy Agency will finance two new emission reductions projects, in the transport and energy sectors. With these two projects, the Swedish Energy Agency has contracted a total of three projects in the country, including a solar energy project in 2023.
– We are proud that Sweden continues to be one of the leading countries in implementing cooperative approaches under the Paris Agreement. The projects, done in cooperation with Ghana, will both reduce emissions and contribute to sustainable development, says Caroline Asserup, Acting Director General at the Swedish Energy Agency.
One of the projects is expected to deploy around 48,000 electric motorcycles, replacing fossil-fueled vehicles in both urban and rural areas of Ghana. The project has been developed by the Ghanaian company Solar Taxi and supported by the international carbon expert South Pole.
The other project has been developed by the TFI Power Company and aims to build a solar power park of approximately 60 megawatts. The park will be connected to the national electricity grid, with solar energy replacing fossil fuel sources. Together, these two projects are expected to reduce emissions in Ghana by the equivalent of 450,000 tons of CO2 by 2030. The projects will also provide new job opportunities in the country.
– Ghana faces financial challenges in its climate transition. These projects are two good examples of how financing under the Paris Agreement can serve as an important tool to accelerate the green transition globally, says Sandra Lindström, Head of International Climate Cooperation at the Swedish Energy Agency.
